For ten days, the Laura Mars gallery in Berlin is transformed into a record shop, complete with records in browser bins, recommendations on the walls and a record shop clerk to assist customers. This record shop, however, only sells one record: Cover Versions by Andrew Pekler, each copy of which is packaged in its own individual album cover.
Andrew Pekler selected 300 different covers from cheap second-hand records and, using colorful geometric elements to cover over all titles, performer's names, and label logos, removed traces of the covers' original contexts.
The sunsets, couples in silhouette, alpine panoramas, roses on pianos, faces in close-up, and seascapes no longer serve as the packaging for easy listening, volksmusik, exotica and light classical recorings. Instead, the romantic, bizarre and intriguingly bland images of the original covers are free to lend their evocative powers to the record of new music they now house.
Likewise, the principle of collage is audible in Andrew Pekler's compositions. The electronically transformed fragments of audio extracted from the original records take on a new existence as Cover Versions.
