I am a huge Rory fan, enough to know that my judgement can be suspect at times. And Rory's live skills did slip as the 1980s gave way to the 1990s. His vocals couldn't even keep up with the increased volume of his concerts once he went back to a power trio in 1978. So, anything live after say, 1986, I can usually pass on. After all, Gerry and Brendan quit in 1991 due to Rory's diminished live capacity.<br>
Imagine my surprise when this set came along. It took a while to purchase and that was mainly because of the set list, which had some unusual songs, especially the blues that he covers. Not that Rory's originals are bad - on the contrary, I still say he is a very under-rated songwriter.<br>
This set is heavy on material from his last two albums. Only four originals from the 1970s are here but they are all choice. Better still, Rory's voice is in fine form, most notable on 'Shin Kicker', which I have heard other versions with the G Man struggling. This time he sounds comfortable.<br>
The audience is in the palm of his hand and his guitar playing is at the usual ultra-high standard. The blues covers - plus 'Keep A Knockin' during the wild finale - are what really make this set. From Muddy to Sonny Boy plus great acoustic versions of "Ride On, Red, Ride On' AND 'Empire State Express'. 'All Around Man' is taken at a version different tempo than the version on 'Against the Grain.'<br>
A superior live performance on a particularly good night, this one is a winner and highly recommended. My only complaint - a small one - is that they do not recognize 'Mean Disposition' as a Muddy Waters song. Otherwise, thanks!
