Info
Earth is the third solo album by the Greek artist Vangelis, released in 1973. It is a prime example of the progressive rock of the day. In contrast to Heaven and Hell (1975) and some soundtracks by Vangelis from this period, Earth was not released on compact disc in the 1980s — it was not until 1996 that a CD version was made available, and then only in Greece.
Richelle Dassin wrote the lyrics.
In 1974 two left-over tracks from the recording sessions for Earth were issued as a single, on the WWA label: Who, written by Fitoussi and Dassin on the A-side and featuring vocals by the former, and the instrumental Sad Face, by Vangelis himself, on the B-side.
Style
The album is a prime example of early-1970s progressive rock but offers some flash-forwards into New Age music, such as "We were all uprooted". The title of the album reflects the influence of ancient (pre-Christian) Greek or Dorian music. Richelle Dassin's lyrics revolve around spiritual themes.
Some critics see the album as a direct progression from the material he was doing with his band Aphrodite's Child. It wasn't until his subsequent releases that Vangelis' electronic, instrumental style became dominant.
Instruments
Vangelis plays keyboards (Hammond L100 organ, Tornado reed organ, Selmer Clavioline), percussion, various ethnic instruments (flute, tabla) and provides background vocals. Most of the synthetic organic sounds on the album came from his Hammond L100 Organ put through a Binson Echorec and some other effects. Collaborating artists are Anargyros Koulouris (guitars, background vocals, and lute) and Robert Fitoussi (bass guitar and lead vocals on tracks 1, 4, 6, and 8). The latter became better known in the 1980s as "F. R. David", when he recorded the hit single "Words". Warren Shapovitch provided the narration on the tracks "We Were All Uprooted" and "A Song".

Info
"Heaven and Hell" is a wonderful album. It really shuts up anyway who thinks that the electronic prog genre requires no skill in terms of instrumental ability and composition. This of course is entirely untrue and the genre is quite sophisticated musically, unlike most regular mainstream electronic music. "Heaven and Hell" also isn't as heavily focused on synthesizers as say Tangerine Dream and I'm happy to say that Vangelis gets to the point quite quickly, although there is some welcome repetition.
"Heaven and Hell" was very difficult to record and once it finally was finished it took and even longer period of time to over come the inherent technical problems facing it. But never the less the album is a huge success and remains one of the favorite albums. One of the major things that attracted me to this album was that Jon Anderson of Yes features on vocals towards the end of the first part of the album. In addition Vana Veroutis and English Chamber Choir also help enhance the album.
The albums begins with part one of "Heaven and Hell" of which the opening section is called "Bacchanale." It begins immediately with an odd sounding synthesizer which is soon joined by the choir. This theme progresses into one killer of an opening. Following this is "Symphony to the Powers B" which in itself progresses many times but is more of a down to earth section in terms of instrumentation than "Bacchanale." "Movement 3" is quite mellow and atmospheric and it works well to set the scene for the next section "So long Ago, So Clear" It features some very nice synthesizers and spacey themes. "So long Ago, So Clear" is my favorite part of the album. It opens with a very beautiful section bristling with synthesizers, soon Jon Anderson comes in on vocals and rest is just amazing.
Part two begins with "Intestinal Bat" which begins with a crash and the sound of bats emulated by percussives and synthesizers begin to sound. The next section entitled "Needles and Bones" features and very strong and almost overdone melody which is repeated many times. It is accented by string pitz and percussion which add variety to the passage. Next is "12 O'Clock" Which begins with a silence after the previous section. It then encompasses the sounds of percussion and various synthesizers until it reaches a peak, and winds down. It repeats this processes again on a smaller scale. After some more doodling the choir and Vana Veroutis come in singing one Gregorian chant-like melody towards start. Vana Veroutis then proceeds to have quite a long vocal solo backed by the choir. Nect up is "Areis" which is quite an intense instrumental passage featuring a couple of strong synthesizer melodies and percussion. Last of all comes "A Way" which ends the album in a very beautiful and spacey manner, great ending.

Info
The 39% of the light received by the Sun is reflected by Earth into the space. This is the meaning of the title. After an album entited Earth that was about our planet from a geographical/ethnic point of view, and the mystic "Heaven and Hell", Vangelis closes a trilogy about our planet looking at it from the space.
"Pulstar" is an excellent opener, with a sustained rhythm, orchestral accents and a captivating melody. Some spacey sounds enhance the final crescendo that's suddenly interrupted by the telephone time service.
From here we go to space."Free Fall" has something of chinese or indonesian for the use of cymbals and the type of melody. The transition to the dramatic "Mare Tranquillitatis" is sudden. It's the site of the first lunar landing and the recorded voices of Apollo's astronauts recreate the athmosphere of July 20th '69. Whoever has watched the landing on TV that night knows what I mean.
"Main Sequence" is another astronomical reference. It's a diagonal on the "Herzsprung- Russell" diagram that represents the status of the majority of the stars before the collapse. This is a caotic and non-melodic track. We are far from the jazzistic debuts, but I think this can be called jazz as well. I don't have an idea of what the signature is. Eight very progressive minutes closed by the last two minutes that are calm and spacey like only Tangerine Dream are able to be.
There is a continuity with "Sword of Orion". The side closer is less than two minutes long. No drumming. It's another short travel into space with SciFi sounds in the background. Very melodic with a hint of classical. A short highlight.
Side B starts with "Alpha". A repetitive melody goes in crescendo until an orchestral explosion after several minutes. It's the easiest track of the album and probably a bit too long, but I remember a TV adv with this music behind the images of two dolphins making jumps in slowmo (starting from when the drumming enters the track).
"Nucleogenesis is a suite in two parts. rhythmic and chaotic like Main Sequence, but more rock than jazz this time. It's one of my favourite tracks in all the Vangelis' discography and probably his last rock act before turning to more relaxing environments in the following albums. The second part of Nucleogenesis is started by a church organ, then it becomes rhythmic again. After an "orchestral interlude" the track is closed by the initial riff.
Now the album closer: a voice reads the "astronomical numbers" of Planet Earth over a very spacey music. Highly athmospheric and evocative of space, it's closed by the voice repeating "Albedo 0.39".
Having given five stars to Heaven and Hell I can't rate this less. If you like watching to the night sky, this is your album.

Info
"Spiral" is for me Vangelis most accomplished work, due in no small part due to the inclusion of the excellent "To the unknown man". The album; which is entirely composed, arranged and performed by Vangelis; consists of just five extended pieces. These are largely predictable, falling at the more commercial end of the territory occupied by bands such as TANGERINE DREAM and their various solo offspring.
The synthesiser sound used by Vangelis is relatively unadventurous, the opening title track indicating exactly what to expect from most of the album. The piece is however an inspired composition, which builds well to a pleasing climax. "Ballad" is indeed a softer piece, but even disregarding the lack of vocals it is not a ballad in the traditional sense. The track has a trance like repeating vocal like synth motif with occasional louder bursts of symphonic synth. Ironically (given the title), this is the most avant-garde of the tracks.
"Dervish D" takes us back to the Spiral theme (illustrated on the sleeve by a snake like image of a headphones jack lead in the sky) the track taking its inspiration from a Dervish dancer. The simple main theme will sound frustratingly familiar, possibly due in part to similarities with parts of RICK WAKEMAN's "White rock" album. There's no suggestion of one copying the other though.
Side two of the LP is split about 50/50 between two tracks. "To the unknown man" is essentially a simple repeated theme, but it stands for me as Vangelis best work. This ("Abadon's") Bolero like piece is structured around a five note call and six note response which builds through the nine minutes of the track to a climax and subsequent peaceful conclusion. At one point, snare drum is used to great effect to build the tension while symphonic synths drift behind the main theme. This is Vangelis' "Trilogy" or "Fanfare for the common man"; a wonderful piece.
"3+3" which closes the album is based around a sequencer theme. Such sounds were relatively new at the time, suddenly becoming familiar through the work of artists like Georgio Marauder (Donna Summer's producer). Instead of vocals though, Vangelis sticks to the familiar synth sound for the main theme. The piece has a slightly more symphonic structure, with occasional fanfares.
In all, an excellent example of the electronic prog genre. For those looking to dip a toe in this type of music, this is an excellent, largely accessible place to start.

Info
Opéra sauvage is a 1979 album, by Greek composer and artist Vangelis, of the score for the nature documentary by the same title by French filmmaker Frédéric Rossif. The album sleeve design is by Vangelis himself. Vangelis produced this album during his electro-acoustic period, which was one of the most productive in his musical career.
Opera Sauvage is more akin to his classic sound than his earlier nature scores for the same director, such as "L'Apocalypse des Animaux" and La Fête sauvage. A later collaboration with Rossif in the style of "Opéra sauvage" was "Sauvage et Beau". "Enjoy this great relaxing atmospheric album; this music is best suited for listening at late evening"
This warm, lyrical album was derived from Vangelis's music for a French television series. Rich, electronic orchestrations range from grandly symphonic to simple and serene. Curiously enough, this title has experienced a major revival since the opening cut, "Hymne" was used for a Gallo Wine commercial. This 1979 release is an excellent introduction to his music.
With a predominance of sounds of harps and other plucked string instruments throughout the album, every track in "Opera Sauvage" (Wild Opera, in French) promises to touch you in a unique way. From the well known opening "Hymn", to the longer songs ("Reve" -dream; and the closing, "Flamant Roses"), through the touching transition tracks "Mouette" and "Irlande" (where you're transported to Celtic landscapes with no difficulty), the album only lacks something: more content.
At just under 43 minutes of duration it leaves you wanting more of Vangelis enchanting music. Released in 1979, this album is among the best of his life's production, along with "Antarctica", "Apocalypse..." and "Bladerunner". Do not hesitate and pick it up: it is a must in any serious collection, plus it is a fabulous vehicle to help you relax in moments of stress.

Info
Among all of his many film soundtracks and New-Age albums, Direct stands out in Vangelis' vast discography. As implied by its title, this is indeed one of the most direct albums he has ever done (and by "direct" here, I do not mean simple or commercial). While still being largely electronic, and still occasionally of a somewhat relaxing nature, this album is more up tempo, melodic and some moments are almost even rocking!
"This is an adventurous and diverse album and in my opinion a Vangelis masterwork"; Enjoy! Note: No silence was deleted, please burn gapless..
Released in 1988, Direct has to be one of Vangelis' best and most accessible albums. He infuses elements of classical, rock, funk and jazz into his electronic style, squarely placing it outside of normal "new age" boundaries. On one of the best tracks, "The Will of the Wind", pan flutes are used against a slow, funk beat -- we can see that he has beaten Enigma to the punch, along with all the other abusers of the pan flute sound. Upbeat, streetwise songs like "Rotation's Logic" and "Ave" are balanced by gentle, classical-esque pieces like "Glorianna" and "The Oracle of Apollo", not to mention the ominous, portentious operatics of "Message". "Intergalactic Radio Station" serves as a terrific closer with an intergalactic DJ signing off (or on), no less!
Anyone remotely curious about Vangelis -- looking beyond his movie scores -- should not miss this album.

Info
The Friends of Mr Cairo is the second collaboration of Jon Anderson and Vangelis as Jon & Vangelis. There are two editions of this album, with different sleeves. Both versions were released in 1981 within a few weeks of each other. The title track, "The Friends Of Mr Cairo", peaked at nr. 1 for 5 weeks on the Canadian singles chart in late 1981.
The second edition of the album includes the single "I'll Find My Way Home", which stayed for 14 weeks in the Swiss charts and peaked at nr. 1 on March 7, 1982 "State of Independence" was later a hit single for Donna Summer, and a decade later for Moodswings with Chrissie Hynde on vocal. Anderson also later re-recorded that song on his solo album Change We Must, released in 1994.
"A Masterpiece"
It must be 20 years ago when I first heard this album, I decided to buy it after being impressed by it's predecessor, 'Short Stories'. This, however is in a different league, a masterpiece that still thrills and captivates with each listening, and listen to it I still do after all these years. The title song demands your attention with its so realistic screeching car chase and machine gun fire at the very start and then goes from one pace to another, from one emotion to another, evoking nostalgic feelings for the cinema of the 30's and 40's, film noir in particular.
Vangelis is an expert in conjuring images with his music and Jon Anderson is his perfect foil, this is music you turn off the lights to and listen raptly through your best headphones. State of Independance was covered many years later by Donna Summer, good cover too. 'I'll find my way home' was added to the album in the later album versions and became the opening track on side one which is a shame, it does not fit so well, being a hit single for the duo. Probably the weakest song is 'Back to school' but a lively addition nevertheless.
I also very much like the songs 'Beside' and 'Outside and Inside', now these are songs to lower your heart beat to a pedestrian pace.
I have recommended this album to many people, they are never disapointed. Enjoy!
