Об альбоме (сборнике)
Suffolk-based synthesist Loula Yorke echoes 20th century minimalism and 17th century baroque music on 'Volta' in an attempt to capture the concept of cyclical time. Using her well-pruned modular setup, she makes convulsing, arpeggio-led zoners that'll no-doubt speak volumes to anyone with an interest in Caterina Barbieri or Suzanne Ciani.
Yorke set herself some rules while she was figuring out her sophomore album. She had a desire to refine her process, which had previously been based around the chaos of improvisation, and so programmed her sequences obsessively by hand. She chose a single set of modules to work from, and established firm boundaries: no granular synthesis, no vocals and no drums. The result is a suite of compositions that fall out of time; made on contemporary gear but following to the '70s kosmische wave, avoiding DAW-style layering or complications. That slimming down of options allows Yorke to concentrate on the compositions themselves, which she admits she "monastically" studied until they were just right.
Blipping monosynth patterns cascade over each other, and Yorke tweaks everything cautiously to enhance and skew the tonality without resorting to over-processing. The result is a synth record that's proud of its palette and doesn't try to obscure the sounds with tape hiss or distortion. Needless to say, if you're into Caterina Barbieri's influential 'Ecstatic Computation', 'Volta' should be considered required listening.
