Kuda kepang
aka Jaran kepang / Jaranan / Jathilan / Sang hyang jaran / Ebeg
Kuda kepang is a traditional Javanese dance. It has many different names in different regions, but it can also be found on Bali where it is called sang hyang jaran. The dance is led by spiritual practitioners called "pawang" or "dukun".
The dance begins with dancers riding flat model horses, similar to a traditional hobby horse. As the dance progresses, spirits of humans and animals are said to enter the dancers' bodies, and they go into a possessed trance. In this trance the performers may act like animals, convulse, or perform feats such as eating strange items like glass and raw rice and walking on hot coals. The dance ends with the spiritual practitioners removing the spirits from the performers.
The dance has a distinct musical form that accompanies it. The music is performed on a stripped back version of a Gamelan ensemble, that removes softer instruments and is generally cheaper and more portable. A reed instrument called a selompret was originally used to perform the main melody, however in modern times this has been replaced by a female vocalist due to the popularity of genres like Jaipongan. The music is intended to be loud, intense and pounding, and features a strong repetitive beat, which helps the dancers fall into a trance.
