• Helen Island •
Knekelhuis’ knack for plucking out modern spins on timeless tropes is in finessed effect with Helen Island’s 2nd turn of thizzing ambient and synth pops emerging from Paris like noctilucent vapours of drill and cloud rap - one for admirers of Voice Actor, Hype Williams/Lolina's H-pop or ML Buch’s downbeat whimsy
‘silence is priceless’ hails Leopold Collin’s return to The Netherlands’ leading retro-futurist label with 16 succinct vignettes or snapshots of urbane ennui that picks up where his sweetly degraded cover of Alice DeeJay left us on 2024’s ‘Last Liasse’ tape. As far as we can hear there are no explicit covers on this one, but the sense of brevity and ability to say all they need in pop-wise morsels remains, delivered in that signature, fragile and breathy falsetto that may well turn others off, but has our attention for the duration.
They venture ever more confident in an absorbing style of quilted collage that stitches past and present with a sort of H-pop for hyper chambers quality. Puckered with a sort of drowsy yet lucid style for the times, songs drift in a piquant haze from the autotuned cloudrap hymn ‘me & who?’ thru stepping post-punk with hints of Billie Eilish’s insouciance on 'hot zone, regular day’, via drill vignettes reminding us of an enchanted Hajj meets Voice Actor, to clear standouts in sublime tension of alert but knackered songcraft to ‘i know 3 45’.
We’re reminded to that ace Rest Symbol mini-LP reissued by Peak Oil and Hysteric Love Project on the crushed breaks and backstroked loops of ‘Stalker Guardian Angel’ and slow motion Heat soundtracky crawl to ‘it’s going better’, and they really dance on the tongue with a quality akin Oklou in ‘Get Rid of Yourself’, asserting at each turn the fact they’re real ones to watch from a blossoming french underground of modern romantics.
