Led by Billy Corgan, the Chicago quartet hailed from the shoegaze school of heavy music (why not release an eight-minute single?) but also embraced influences from scuzzy '70s hard rock and melodic indie pop. Even for them, 1995's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was ambitious: a 28-track double album that encompassed orchestrated epics ("Tonight, Tonight"), pile-driving metallic rock ("Zero," "Bullet with Butterfly Wings"), nostalgic jangle ("1979"), and stripped-back psychedelia ("Thirty-Three"). Co-produced by Corgan, Flood and Alan Moulder, the album's embrace of dynamics prevented the music from becoming too labored. On the space-rock sprawl "Porcelina of the Vast Oceans," synth zaps soar in and out of the mix like seagulls; the tender folk song "Stumbleine" resembles Elliott Smith of all things; and "We Only Come Out At Night" is an aptly named, eerie synth-pop track. Beyond these moments, however, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was often uncompromising, dominated by snarled guitar riffs and Corgan's throat-shredding yowls; highlights include the pummeling grunge-metal gem "Jellybelly," the scathing "An Ode to No One," and the agonizing "Bodies." This ferocity is thrown into sharp relief on the album's 30th anniversary edition, which features two discs of newly rediscovered vintage live material captured in the mid-1990s. On these songs, Corgan and the original Smashing Pumpkins lineup—guitarist James Iha, bassist D'arcy Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin—tear through select past tunes (a stinging version of "Siva") and cuts from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness with raw, reckless abandon. During a seven-and-a-half minute version of "X.Y.U.," the music stops dead even more abruptly than the studio version—and Corgan lets out a blood-curdling scream before the song kicks back in, gnarlier than ever. Guitar riffs divebomb like video game missiles on "An Ode to No One," while the towering fuzzrocker "Muzzle" is more desperate, as Corgan sounds wistful, his gravelly voice ragged with emotion. Despite (or perhaps because of) its massive scope, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness became a multiplatinum commercial blockbuster that would later fuel the grand ambitions of future superstars Panic! At The Disco and My Chemical Romance. But thirty years ago, in the post-Nirvana age where modern rock was trying to find its footing, Smashing Pumpkins radiated possibility—and succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. © Annie Zaleski
