Joe Bonamassa re-issues a remastered , re-sung and revamped version of his groundbreaking debut album A New Day Now this coming Friday, August 7th. You may wonder why an artists would do such a thing, a re-issue of a debut album celebrating its anniversary is nothing strange, remastered for sure, remixed, but re-sung? Well I have often wondered how artists look back at their early work and wonder do they harbour a desire to get back into a studio and take a second shot at them. As long time producer Kevin Shirley says “as time has gone by, Joe’s vocal style, particularly, has changed enormously. He’s grown from an adolescent shouter to a very mature and soulful singer. From early on in our working relationship, Joe has mentioned that he would really like to have another shot at those vocals, and asked that if he did redo them, would I remix his first solo album.”<span class="post-br"><br></span>Bonamassa doesn’t really receive credit for his vocal quality nearly enough, it is a mesmerising thing watching him live bellowing out vocals runs so effortlessly and then rip into a blistering guitar solo without breaking a sweat. His mastery over both the guitar and his vocals are second to none. So with this debut album reborn out of a passion to pull it out of the shadows and place it agains his more recent work you can understand Joe’s logic. This album may be a twenty year old project but the songwriting is as remarkable as the current crop, possibly a slightly more aggressive Bonamassa, a six-string slinger looking to make an impression and what an impression it made. Bonamassa never looked back, and with that came an onslaught of timeless recordings, solo albums, collaborations with some of the industry’s finest musicians and an inspirational innovator within the genre who paved a wave for many an artist to try and replicate, through a desire to remain independent and control his own fate. An amazing story in this crazy modern day industry where so many quality artists just never get the break they deserve.<span class="post-br"><br></span>So what do you get here for your hard earned cash, if you are a long-term Bonamassa fan you’ll appreciate the remastered recording in its fine sonic glory, Bonamassa’s vocals hit the mark with the re-sung versions to give you that contemporary flavour, and of course the guitar work is just sublime. For you new kids on the block who may have only got into Joe mid way through his bruising career or via one of his collaborations with Beth Hart or Black Country Communion this album will give you the best of both worlds, early Joe on steroids.<span class="post-br"><br></span>Well worth robbing the kids money bank for A New Day Now (2020) is a timely reminder of just how good baby Bonamassa was, and just how scarily good big boy Bonamassa is now.<span class="post-br"><br></span>Here’s to many more years of the same.
